The Lifegard Aquatics Hang on the Side Filters HOF Series utilizes proprietary replacement filter cartridges that are sold in packages of two (Part # R460110). Each filter chamber has grooves on each side that act as guides for Lifegard's filter cartridges to slide in perfectly. Users should press the cartridge from the top to push it downward all the way for a snug fit.
Lifegard Aquatics filter cartridges are designed to satisfy the filtration needs of most aquarists. Since the cartridges were specifically engineered for Lifegard's hang-on filters, water flows through them rather than alongside, around, or underneath. This ensures that water does not bypass the media, and the entire surface area of each cartridge is utilized, substantially extending their lifecycle. As a result, users will not have to purchase and change media as often as they would with other hang-on power filters in this class.
The Lifegard Aquatics Hang-On Filter is engineered to provide more efficient filtration, trapping more debris and waste. This is achieved through its multi-stage filtration design, which offers three distinct stages:
Stage ① BIOLOGICAL➕ MECHANICAL FILTRATION: A 2-in-1 solution, the sponge pores are sized to allow beneficial bacteria to colonize, while a 40-micron removable sponge filter traps large debris.
Stage ② CHEMICAL➕ BIOLOGICAL FILTRATION: Activated carbon removes dangerous toxins and creates a safe zone for beneficial bacteria to cultivate, effectively functioning as a natural bio-filter.
Stage ③ MECHANICAL FILTRATION: A 20-micron filter pad traps small debris and free-floating particles, such as uneaten food, dust, detritus, and other organic waste that can degrade water quality.
The hang-on filter is designed to trap large debris at the sponge level, which can be removed through periodic cleaning. The activated carbon eliminates harmful toxins and cultivates beneficial bacteria for a healthy environment, while the fine filter pad addresses fine debris.
Sold in sets of 2, these replacement filter cartridges are suitable for freshwater, saltwater aquariums, or terrariums. | directions | Installation Tips & Tricks Make sure the suction overflow pipe is firmly seated within the grooves If needed, push-fit the surface skimmer to the telescopic suction pipe. Plug it or leave it open. Push-fit the round level fitting and slide the telescopic suction pipe into the suction overflow pipe and adjust the depth. Hang filter on the aquarium wall with suction end in the water. Twist the level fitting to make the filter parallel to the tank wall. The replacement filter cartridges come with a removable sponge. Make sure the filter cartridge is installed in the groove and pushed all the way in for optimal performance. Add water to the filter until you see water draining from the overflow drain. Place the top cover on the filter and adjust the HI/LO flow control to desired flow and plug-in the pump cord. Make a drip loop with the wire/cable before you plug the filter into a GFCI protected outlet. Once the pump starts, it only takes a short time to start the siphon. Once the siphon starts, the filter quiets down and you can see water follow over the return. Never run the hang-on filter dry. | ||||
